Mühlensommer

Ein drückend heisser Sommertag. Mit ihren beiden Töchtern fährt die alleinerziehende Maria in ein langes Wochenende fern von Stadt, Stress und Schule. Doch dann ruft Marias Mutter an: Der Vater hatte einen Unfall und liegt im Krankenhaus. Auf dem Bauernhof der Familie müssen Kühe, Schweine und Hühner versorgt werden – aber auch die demente Grossmutter. Als Maria in ihrem Elternhaus ankommt, erwartet sie neben der unermüdlich Äpfel schälenden Oma auch Erinnerungen aus ihrer Kindheit zwischen Schulbus und Schweinestall, Dreimeterbrett und Kirchenbank, an starre Traditionen und kleine Freiheiten; als sie und ihr Bruder noch ein Herz und eine Seele waren und die Arbeit am Bauernhof und der Mühle ihr tägliches Leben neben der Schule war. Als die Mutter aus dem Spital heimkehrt und Marias Bruder Thomas auf dem Hof steht, ist die Familie versammelt. Sie eint die stille Sorge um den Vater. Bis Thomas das Schweigen bricht und endlich zur Sprache kommt, was sie alle lang verdrängt haben.

Martina Bogdahn, geboren 1976, lebt und arbeitet als Fotografin und Autorin in München. Warmherzig und humorvoll erzählt sie in «Mühlensommer» von einem Leben zwischen zwei Welten – von einer Jugend auf dem Land und die Flucht in die Stadt.

Ruby Johnson is a seemingly ordinary nanny and maid who works for many of the wealthy families in Manhattan’s exclusive West 74 Street. Memorising their needs, routines and secrets, Ruby has made herself indispensable to various families, even though most of them look down on her due to her family’s past connection to the rich community.  However, Ruby is about to shake-up the entire street when she witnesses the murder of one of their most controversial inhabitants.

The only person who knows who committed the terrible murder, Ruby sneaks away key evidence and places an anonymous call to the police, naming the wrong killer –  an innocent man – and turns the entire street against him. As chaos descends upon West 74 Street and an family suffers the stigma associated with murder, it becomes clear that something is wrong with Ruby, and that she will destroy anyone to get what she wants.

It soon falls to Eddie Flynn, former conman turned trial attorney to defend the innocent man accused of the crime.  Facing off against an ambitious District Attorney, the all-consuming secrecy of the West 74 Street’s inhabitants, and threats much closer to home, Eddie Flynn will need to bring every legal trick and con in his vast repertoire to keep his client out of jail.
